fiber optic patch cord is a fiber optic cable capped at either end with connectors that allow it to be rapidly and conveniently connected to CATV, an optical switch or other telecommunication equipment. This time, let’s take a look at the fiber optic patch cord connector type.

Fiber optic patch cord connector refers to the jumper that connects the device to the fiber-optic cabling link. It has connectors at both ends and has a thick protective layer. It is generally used to connect the optical transceiver to the terminal box. Fiber patch cords are similar to coaxial cables except that there is no mesh shield. The center is the glass core of light transmission.

In a multimode fiber, the core has a diameter of 50 μm to 65 μm, which is roughly equivalent to the thickness of a human hair. The single mode fiber core has a diameter of 8 μm to 10 μm. The outer periphery of the core is surrounded by a glass envelope having a lower index of refraction than the core to retain the fiber within the core. Next to it is a thin plastic jacket to protect the envelope.

What are the classifications of fiber jumpers?

According to different transmission media, fiber optic cables can be divided into common single-mode jumpers and multi-mode jumpers, and other optical fiber jumpers such as plastics. It can be divided into FC Jumpers, SC jumpers, ST jumpers, LC jumpers, MTRJ jumpers, MPO jumpers, MU jumpers, SMA jumpers, FDDI jumpers and other forms which based on the the structure of the connector. The more common fiber optic cables can also be divided into FC-FC, FC-SC, FC-LC, FC-ST, SC-SC, SC-ST, and so on.

Single Mode Fiber Patch Cables: Conventional fiber patch cords are shown in yellow. The connectors and protective sleeves are blue and have a long transmission distance.

Multimode Fiber Patch Cables: Conventional fiber patch cords are shown in orange, and some are shown in gray. The connectors and covers are in beige or black with a short transmission distance.

Using Tips

1 The two ends of the optical fiber must be optical modules of the same wavelength.

The simple method is to distinguish the color of the optical module. In general, short-wavelength optical modules use multimode fiber (orange fiber), and long-wavelength optical modules use single-mode fiber (yellow fiber) to ensure data transmission accuracy.

2 The fiber should not be excessively bent and looped during use, which will increase the attenuation of light during transmission.

3 After using the fiber jumper, the fiber connector must be protected with a protective cover, otherwise dust and oil will damage the coupling of the fiber.
